Seasons Change

Today we’re back to hot and humid weather after a couple of weeks of coolness. When the weather first turned cool there was a momentary feeling of dismay. “Oh no! Summer is almost over!” But after a muggy day like today I wouldn’t mind some Autumn.
It’s been a very dry summer. Today I went out to mow the lawn weeds. I hadn’t had an opportunity to go mowing for a while and didn’t think the grass needed it. But then the weeds grew thigh-high, and something had to be done. The grass itself wasn’t actually long enough for the mower to touch, but the front lawn was starting to resemble a wild meadow. It looks so nice and neat now. By tomorrow night all the weeds will be four inches tall and it’ll seem like I didn’t do anything at all. Kind of futile, really. I’m tired of weeds. Another reason to look forward to autumn.
Because of the dryness I suspect the trees are stressed. They’ll probably just drop their leaves without bothering to go to the trouble of colouring them orange and yellow and red. Nevertheless, the old oak at the back usually puts on a good display. Apparently a tree this size transfers water from roots to leaves to atmosphere to the tune of about 830 liters (almost one ton) per day.
