Photography, Part 2: Desire vs. Reality

I regularly browse through the week’s popular photos on flickr, sometimes wishing I had the ability and artistry, or had the equipment to take photos that are that good. But most often I wish I had the time to invest in the painstaking attention to detail excellent photos require. Time is what I don’t have.
For example, back in February I joined a photo-a-day group, with the goal of taking a photo of myself every day for a year. Things went pretty well for a couple of months, until child #3 was born. Since then I’ve been lucky to manage a photo a month. It’s not that I can’t take photos at all–I’ve got plenty of snapshots of the kids. It’s just that taking my own photo requires a bit of planning and preparation. Setting up the shot, even if it’s only ten minutes, takes time I don’t have.
So I make the best of the opportunities I get. As they say, if you can’t take the photos you’d like, like the photos you take. And I like tonight’s photo (above, click for a larger version).
