Still Life, with Gears

We made a gearbox today. We were so proud of it we had to show it off. As official photographer I put together my very first still life. It’s funny: I’ve been taking photos since 1986, and this is the first time I’ve composed and shot this most basic staple of photography and the visual arts. You can see a bigger version of it here.

Work is going through a flurry of marketing, motivated in part by the current lack of long-term work. We normally wouldn’t make gearboxes. We’d buy them. But hey, we have the in-house expertise, so why not? If we can market them successfully and manufacture them efficiently, they’d be a good little bread-and-butter line of income.

Apart from all the bolts, the photo has every single piece needed to assemble the gearbox. Except one. There is one very important part missing. It’s a reasonably large part, and it’s quite obvious if you think about it for a minute. Can you figure it out? Guesses in the comments.

Days like today work is actually fun.

A worm? There’s an awful lot of non-gear “stuff” in that gearbox, and not a lot of actual, you know, gears!

  2. Stephen Says:

The worm is there. It’s black, just to the right of the big brass gear.

  3. Andrew Says:

The shaft through the big brass gear if the other shaft goes through the worm gear

  4. Stephen Says:

You’re right. There’s only one shaft in the picture. The other shaft is missing. The missing one goes through the worm.
