On The Road Again

Flew into Vancouver tonight with WestJet. Quite a pleasant flight, but I left work ten hours ago and it’s now 2am in my home town. Way too late to be up blogging. This is the first time I’ve flown domestic since my honeymoon, eight years ago. Every flight between then and now has been part of an international trip. Today’s flight seemed pretty short, by comparison, but there’s still all the mucking around in airports, and waiting for the shuttle bus, and so on. Hence the ten hours.
Nevertheless, it’s so much more relaxing to fly domestic compared to international. When departing on an international flight, on a large plane, from a large airport, with large crowds, security staff start on the assumption that you’re out to cause harm, and it just gets worse from there. On the other hand, departing on a domestic flight, on a small plane, from a small airport, where your flight is the only one out today, security staff are friendly, and kind, and helpful, and it’s a totally different experience. Sample quote in the departure lounge, over the PA: “Will the person who dropped their cookie please come and retrieve it from the security desk, before it gets eaten.” And that was one of the more serious announcements. Honestly. A small regional jet arrives and it’s a big event.
I suspect I’m supposed to check in with others of my group, who all arrived before me, but I think I’ll put it off till tomorrow morning. Our official meeting isn’t till one in the afternoon, so plenty of time to sleep in.
