Meshing Together Nicely

Worm Mesh

A week ago I took some photos of all the parts that go into a gearbox (you can read that post here).

Today they put the gearbox together. It looks a lot simpler when it’s a single, whole unit. I took some photos before they put the covers on. Here you can see the worm gear mesh with the spur gear. Quite a simple mechanism, though you wouldn’t know it from looking at the scattering of parts that went into it. There’s a picture of the final, assembled gearbox here.

And why do I get excited over something so mundane? Dunno. Because it’s shiny? Because it has gears? Because it’s a finely-crafted piece of machinery that I can actually understand?
