I took the boys out tonight to a local farm to pick out a pumpkin. There were stacks of pumpkins all beautifully arranged on hay bales inside an old barn. There were more stacks on wooden pallets outside. Oh, the fun! Climbing around the pumpkins. Walking around inside the barn. Talking a mile a minute. Why are all these pumpkins here, Daddy? Why are we going inside the barn, Daddy? Why is this one the best pumpkin, Daddy? Why do we have to pay for it? And from Daniel, This one looks like roadkill Daddy. That got a chuckle from the farmer standing over in the corner.
We got home just in time to sit down to eat, and during the meal the pumpkin sat on the corner table teasing the boys.
“Can we carve it now, Daddy?”
No, it’s time to eat.
After they’d cleaned their plates, “Can we carve it now, Daddy?”
No, it’s time for dessert.
After dessert, “Can we carve it now, Daddy?”
Yes, we can carve it now.
Surprisingly, after all that anticipation it turned out they weren’t all that excited about the actual carving process. They wanted to see the finished product. That captured their attention. In fact, what they were really looking forward to was the lighting of a candle inside the pumpkin. Boys and fire. Why is there always that fatal attraction?
Epilogue: We got them ready for bed in record time, with the promise of blowing out the candle once they were in their pajamas.
