Work arranged a rental car for me to travel this week. It’s cheaper for them than paying me mileage, and I get to leave my car at home, and I get to drive a new car. Good all around.

This week’s vehicle was small (they always are, compared to the behemoth I usually drive) but crammed with tech goodies. First of all, there was the full-function remote, complete with keyless entry and remote start. I’d never driven a car with remote start before, and several times I stood thirty feet away and tried to start the car from a distance. Kind of like a toy RC car, but bigger and better. Anyway, the first time I pressed buttons and nothing happened, and I pressed more buttons and nothing happened, and then all of a sudden the car started! Cool! I wasn’t sure what the successful combination was, because I’d ended up pressing buttons almost at random. But I got it to start!

The next time I tried all sorts of button combinations, and nothing worked. The car refused to start. I was standing in a parking lot with freezing wind whistling around my ears, so I gave up pretty quickly and got in and started the car the normal way.
