Friends of ours are house-sitting for a client, and invited us over tonight for dinner and a swim. So at the appointed hour we pulled into a long, winding driveway and parked in front of an imposing mansion set up on a hill.

The entryway was nice, but nothing unexpected. About right for the expectations set by the house’s exterior. High ceilings, lots of wood, fancy furniture. You get the idea. Then we were introduced to the pool.

The pool area was bigger than our house (and reportedly cost more than twice as much). It was entirely enclosed in glass, like a conservatory or a greenhouse. Outside a winter storm raged, throwing ice pellets against the glass in a distant clatter. Inside it was a balmy 30
