Lost in a book

It was a very quiet day today. Daniel discovered the Tintin books and was gone all day. Joel had no one to torment him or to compete against, so he had a quiet day. Micah was a happy baby.

Tonight Daniel and Joel excitedly described the stories to me. All of a sudden I was out of my depth, trying to recall stories I hadn’t read for years. Some I remembered easily, like Explorers on the Moon. Others, like The Secret of The Unicorn, not so easily.

Of course, the boys haven’t pieced together the plots yet, so what I got was vivid descriptions of individual panels with none of the surrounding context. And sometimes they described what they thought they saw, their own interpretation of images they didn’t quite understand or yet have words for. All in all, they kept me on my toes, kept me guessing. It was like a game show. “I’ll have giant playground clowns for $200, please.” I have no idea where you get giant clowns in Tintin, but Joel assured me they were there.

And so begins the great book adventure, in earnest. Reading for pleasure, reading for excitement, for discovery. Reading long into the night by the light of a flashlight (aka torch). Just like their parents, many years ago.
