Free Time (What’s That?)

Worn Out

Micah went to bed at about 9 tonight. This offers us an evening of unprecedented freedom. A couple of weeks ago we moved his crib upstairs, as far away from the rest of the family as possible, where he could cry to his heart’s content (OK, so that’s a somewhat contradictory turn of phrase). We just couldn’t handle the baby awake till midnight every night.

The other two boys go to sleep at about 7:30, and that’s our target. So for the last little while we’ve been trying to get Micah to bed earlier and earlier in the evening. Nine o’clock isn’t quite 7:30, but it’s a psychological threshold that feels like a major milestone, a satisfactory accomplishment. Debbie felt she had the whole evening ahead of her, with nothing to do. Our evenings have been so disrupted by baby that this turn of events is quite a novelty. We’re somewhat unprepared for this bonanza of free time.

Now, you’d think we’d take advantage of it and get to bed earlier so we’re not so sleep-deprived. Especially seeing as early to bed for the baby seems to also mean early to rise. But no. We still stay up late, night owls that we are. So yes, there’s hope for Micah getting into a reasonable sleep pattern. For the parents? Not so much hope.
