Losing stuff is a pain. Friday I lost a contact lens. Yesterday I lost my luggage, which contained my other contact lens. This morning I had a scheduled appointment with my optometrist at the contact lens clinic, and I had no contacts.
I went to my appointment anyway, ordered a new lens to replace the lost one, and hoped the other lens would show up on my doorstep once the airline located my bag.
We discussed the poor performance of my contacts over the month since my last appointment. How most days the contacts substantially reduce my vision for the first hour or two of the day. Then I clean and re-insert them, and my vision is fine for the rest of the day. But for that first little while I’m virtually blind in one eye. It’s only ever one eye. Often the left, sometimes the right, but never both. And never none. Over the Christmas break I didn’t wear my contacts at all. It was too frustrating.
The student optometrist, and later the doctor herself, told me my only recourse was to adhere strictly to the regimen they’d given me in December. I told them I’d followed it religiously for two weeks, with no change. They told me it could take months before I saw any improvement. How can I go for months with something that makes my already poor vision even worse? When they work, the contacts give me perfect eyesight. It’s maddening.
For now I’m back to glasses. They don’t do a very good job, but they’re better than nothing.
In other news, my laptop power supply is also in my missing bag. I can’t use the laptop until the bag shows up. I’ll really be in trouble if the bag is lost for good. I hope I don’t get any service calls in the next few days, where I need the laptop. That’ll teach me for trying to divest myself of some carry-on weight.
Photo note: Daniel, in a gloomy mood. While I was away he lamented, “When will Daddy come back? When will our family be complete again?” The boys were pretty happy to see me. Debbie was happy too (and relieved).
