Pancake Day

Apparently today was Pancake Day, or so I was informed when I got home. That meant we had to have pancakes for dinner. Seeing as I normally cook pancakes on a Saturday morning, Debbie felt it was only right that I cook them tonight. It seemed like a thinly-veiled plot to get me to make dinner, but I like pancakes so I went along with it. And we had a yummy dinner. It felt a little odd, having a weekend breakfast on a week night, but that’s just the traditionalist in me.
Later I looked it up, and the official title is Shrove Tuesday. That’s the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Lent is the 40 days before Easter, when you’re supposed to abstain from festivities and fancy foods, and do penance. Thus, Shrove Tuesday is your last chance to celebrate and indulge. It seems pancakes are the epitome of indulgence and fancy foods. Who am I to question such a solemn tradition?
But I felt the clash of Catholic tradition with family tradition. It would have suited me a lot better if Pancake Day had fallen on a Saturday.
