Sleepy, Slippery Sunday

It was icy this morning, freezing rain pelting down. I headed out to church with Daniel–just the two of us–and as soon as the car backed out of the level garage onto the sloping driveway it began to slide down the hill. I wasn’t too concerned. There are snowbanks piled high on either side of the driveway, so the car would stay on the straight & narrow. And the driveway levels out before reaching the street, so I knew we’d stop before meeting unintentionally with other cars. Besides, there was very little traffic this morning. Most people had the sense to stay home.
When we arrived I pulled Daniel out of his car seat, standing him on the pavement beside me. He took one step and promptly fell flat on his back, sliding under the car. It was icy. I fished him out, dusted him off, and reminded him to take baby steps on the ice. Slowly, with no further mishap, we made it into the building.
It was a very quiet service. Including Daniel and I, there was a grand total of six people. Some people (particularly the older ones) stayed home because of the weather. Some were at a weekend camp. Others were away on holiday. It was cozy and companionable, such a tiny congregation, but very quiet.
Debbie and the three boys slept all afternoon. The house was deathly quiet. I simply cannot remember how it was like this all the time, before we had children. It seems like the noise and bustle have always been there. Not that I objected to the quiet. I should have napped too–one of these days my sleep deprivation is going to catch up to me. But I had too much to do. Instead, I laboured all afternoon on photos, sorting and editing. My afternoon was restful in its own way.
