Catching up is hard to do

I’m weary from travel. Debbie is weary from ten days alone with the children, and from being sick. The boys are weary from also being sick. I’m not sick (yet), so there’s something to be grateful for. But with me away and Debbie and the boys under the weather, it’s like the household has been put on hold for a week. It’s time to catch up.
I had originally intended to take Monday off work to get some rest and get organized at home. But flight delays meant I spent all day yesterday traveling instead, so rather than take a whole day off all at once I think I’ll have a week of short days. The boys are generally at their best in the morning and at their most difficult in the afternoon. It’ll probably be most helpful if I leave work shortly after lunch. I don’t have much to do at work anyway, so there’s no objection to my plan.
This afternoon I did the week’s grocery shopping on the way home. Normally we shop on a Saturday morning but Debbie had been too ill to go this past weekend. The family had been subsisting on cheese on toast, apparently. It was a strange experience to wander through almost abandoned aisles of the supermarket on a mid-week early afternoon. Saturday mornings are usually packed with shoppers, the check-out lines extending into the aisles. That was my normal grocery-shopping experience. Today’s empty store was alien.
Tonight I have to focus on just being with the kids, to set aside everything else and bring the home back to a peaceful, stable, normal routine. And hopefully manage an early night to bed for all of us.
