Hungary Collage

I finally caught up with my photos. I printed some last November, and since then hadn’t really done much to organize the collection slowly accumulating on my computer. The situation was starting to get out of hand, especially since I got Debbie her own camera at Christmas. Anyway, I’m fully up-to-date with photos printed (240 all in one set today, over an album’s worth), photos uploaded to flickr, and photos archived to DVD (two discs). That covered Christmas, a birthday, several church events, and a trip to Europe. I hope to have a lull for a month or two–a little more normality, a little less excitement, a little more sleep–before new photos start to pile up again. Besides, it felt kind of bizarre printing photos from Christmas when the event was almost three months ago.

A new challenge is integrating photos from two cameras into one workflow. Up until now, sorting photos alphabetically by file name was equivalent to sorting them chronologically. That doesn’t work any more, because each camera is in a different part of its numbering sequence. It’s not so much of a problem on the computer, where I can sort by date, but when I get a stack of prints from the local mini-lab it’s so much easier if they’re all in order when I come to put them into albums. The mini-lab will sort them by file name, which would force me to re-sort the prints by hand at home. Another issue is conflicts where photos from two cameras have the same file name. That wasn’t so hard: I added an initial in front of the file name to distinguish who’s camera it was from. And I think I have a workable solution for the ordering problem, too, that involves adding an extra sequence number reflecting the chronological order. It’s all mostly automatic, so I’m not bogged down with repetitive manual labour.
