Walk & Talk

Micah is growing up. A little while ago he got the hang of proper crawling, and now he’s a speedy baby, zooming off with great haste to where he’s not supposed to be. The more he’s forbidden the faster he’ll go. It’s a manifestation of his contrary nature coupled with the new-found skill of locomotion. His favourite destination is the stairs. We have to take great care to leave the hallway door closed all the time, because if that door is open Micah will make a beeline down the hall. Daniel or Joel will call out, “Micah’s heading for the stairs”, and by the time Debbie reaches him Micah will be five steps up on his way to the top, teetering on the edge of disaster and grinning his little face off. The older boys go up and down the stairs every day. Why shouldn’t he?
Micah is also starting to talk. Now I use the word “talk” in the loosest sense. He babbles away, particularly when he’s happy, and Debbie assures me there is meaning behind the sounds. Apparently he has words for More Food, Pick Me Up, Bye Bye, Daddy, amongst others, but I have to take Debbie’s word for it. He certainly seems to know what he’s talking about, and Debbie thinks she knows what he’s talking about. All I know is that Micah usually knows exactly what I’m talking about. His speech may be unintelligible, but his hearing and understanding are perfectly clear.
You know what they say about kids:
You spend the first two years of their lives teaching them to walk and talk, and then the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.
