Treacherous Tuesday

This photo was from way back in mid-December, when winter was just getting under way. We had a snow storm that made driving very difficult. Most people just stayed home. We weren’t too surprised. After all, we were heading into the dead of winter and you have to expect something like that sooner or later. What we did not expect was to have the same thing again today.
It’s the end of March. Spring is officially here. We should be getting green buds on the trees, birds chirping in the branches. Maybe somebody forgot to tell the weather.
It was a slow, treacherous drive home from work this afternoon. When I walked in the door Debbie expressed her deep concern: she’d run out of books and had to go to the library to pick up more. Did I think it would be OK for her to briefly drive there, and could I please look after the kids while she was gone. She wouldn’t be long.
Don’t go, Debbie! It’s dangerously slippery out there. The books can wait.
That earned me a dubious look. Didn’t I realize that no books constituted an emergency? How bad could the weather possibly be, that it would prevent a run to the library?
It’s bad, Debbie. It’s icy. You wouldn’t like it. And you might have an accident. Then it really would be an emergency.
I managed to convince her, and we all stayed home tonight, safe and snug and warm. But shouldn’t it be spring already?
