Daniel is learning to play the piano, and he’s learning to read. One thing he’s learned of music is that when a note is followed by a dot it is three beats long. He has to name the notes and count while he plays. So playing a piece goes something like, “A, B – two – three, C”.
It was much to our amusement, then, when we heard him read a story out loud from one of his library books this morning. It went like this: “Nate sat and thought about it – two – three – This case was a real mystery – two – three – He wondered where to look for more clues – two – three.” It took us a moment to realize that the “two – three” was Daniel’s interpretation of the full stop at the end of each sentence. A dot means three beats of course, and he was counting them out.
A lesson learned sometimes has a life application, but usually rules in one discipline just don’t carry through to anything else – two – three.
