School’s not gonna be fun

Royal Palace on Buda Hill

For the parents, that is.

Aiming for the 9:30 morning service at church today, we arrived at 10:45. And it wasn’t an unusual morning. There was the usual flurry of activity, getting the kids up, dressed, toileted, breakfasted, toileted again, tooth-brushed, shod, and out the door into the car. Oh, and Debbie and I also had to get up, dressed, etc. It seems simple enough when you list all the tasks like that, but reality is a lot more complicated. The kids eat slowly in the morning, so breakfast is an exercise in frustrated, hurried dawdling. Getting dressed is a textbook case of inefficiency with the constant interruptions of small children underfoot.

Daniel starts school in September, and he has to be at the classroom door at 8:55. No ifs, ands or buts. We have no idea how we’re going to manage it, getting everybody ready so that I can leave for work at 8 and Debbie can walk the three blocks to school with the three boys. It’ll be an even greater challenge in Winter, with all that snow and additional clothing.

The answer, of course, is for all of us to get up earlier in the morning. To that end we’ve embarked on a new training regime. We have six weeks to get into shape, to get into the habit of getting up early. A search of my photos on flickr revealed not a single picture out of 4,300 tagged with the word “dawn”. In fact, there were only seven photos that could be identified as morning shots. The picture at the top is about the closest I can get to early morning. And that was taken while I was on holiday. By myself.

Being perpetually late for church is not good, but we’re going to get a severe lesson in timeliness in the near future. Oh, the dread of early mornings.
